“I own the silver, I own the gold, Decree of God-of-the-Angel-Armies.
This temple is going to end up far better than it started out,
a glorious beginning but an even more glorious finish;
a place in which I will hand out wholeness and holiness. Decree of God-of-the-Angel-Armies.”

Haggai 2:8, The Message

All that gold! From the beginning of Scripture in Genesis to Jesus’s parting words to us in Revelation, gold is immensely favored and used by the Lord.

“The name of the first is the Pishon. It is the one that flowed around the whole land of Havilah, where there is gold.”

Genesis 2:11

“And the twelve gates were twelve pearls, each of the gates made of a single pearl, and the street of the city was pure gold, like transparent glass.”

Can you see the yellow and orange hues in gold?

From Genesis to Revelation (see verses cited above) God told His people where to find gold! It’s like a picture of finding the proverbial pot of gold at the end of a rainbow!

Throughout the Pentateuch, God gives us the value of gold because He values gold. I wondered how much gold was used in the building of the tabernacle both in Moses’ time and in the time of King Solomon’s rule. But even though the Lord values gold, there are things He values more; and He asks us to value them more as well. Most importantly, we must value Him.

“Give in to God, come to terms with him and everything will turn out just fine.
Let him tell you what to do; take his words to heart. Come back to God Almighty and he’ll rebuild your life.
Clean house of everything evil. Relax your grip on your money and abandon your gold-plated luxury.
God Almighty will be your treasure, more wealth than you can imagine.”

Job 22:21-25, The Message

We must value our Lord’s Word:

“The law of the LORD is perfect,

More to be desired are they than gold, even much fine gold; sweeter also than honey and drippings of the honeycomb.”

Psalm 19:7-10

“Therefore I love your commandments above gold, above fine gold.”

Psalm 119:127

Scripture tells us that wisdom is worth more than gold:

“How much better to get wisdom than gold!
To get understanding is to be chosen rather than silver.”

Psalm 16:16

Job knew that when the end of his trials came, he would be as gold:

“But he knows the way that I take; when he has tried me, I shall come out as gold.”

Job 23:10

Our faith is more important to the Lord than gold:

“In this you rejoice, though now for a little while, if necessary, you have been grieved by various trials,
so that the tested genuineness of your faith–more precious than gold that perishes though it is tested by fire–
may be found to result in praise and glory and honor at the revelation of Jesus Christ.”

1 Peter 1:6-7

We are more important to God than gold:

“I will make people more rare than fine gold, and mankind than the gold of Ophir.”

Isaiah 13:10

All this gold talk makes me think of crowns and the coming of our Lord.

“Henceforth there is laid up for me the crown of righteousness,
which the Lord, the righteous judge, will award to me on that day,
and not only to me but also to all who have loved his appearing.”

2 Timothy 4:8

As the storms and wars end, when earth’s current history is over and Jesus rules the land, His golden light will end the darkness.
